Three residents and two pets were able to escape unharmed from a house fire on Weathervane Road in the early morning hours on Monday, November 11. Fire Chief Charles Doody said the home had working smoke alarms and the residents were alerted to the fire by the sound of crackling in the walls.

As many as 30 firefighters worked on operations lasting until almost 9 a.m. on Monday morning. No injuries to firefighters or residents were reported.

The initial call came in at approximately 2:45 a.m. from the Holbrook Regional Communications Center for a working structure fire. First responders from Engine 4 reported heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building over the garage. Chief Doody said the Engine 4 crew began to attack the fire by advancing a hose line through the garage to the second floor.

A large volume of fire was located in the attic space and interior conditions quickly deteriorated, prompting Captain Ed Freitas, who was the shift commander, to evacuate the Engine 4 crew from the structure.

A second alarm was put out and crews from Stoughton, Norwood, Sharon, Milton and Foxboro arrived to assist with firefighting operations while firefighters from Avon, Randolph, and Walpole provided coverage to the Canton stations.

Doody said exterior operations were set up until the main volume of fire could be controlled to allow crews to reenter. Firefighters were then able to extinguish the remainder of the fire on the second floor and in the attic.

Doody said damages are estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Canton Water Department supplemented water pressure in the area while firefighting operations were ongoing. Building Commissioner Ed Walsh and the town’s electrical inspector were called to the scene to inspect the stability of the home and to ensure that the utilities were safe. Canton police also responded and provided traffic and crowd control.
