The town of Canton plans to renovate the town-owned Earl Newhouse Waterfront at Reservoir pond. According to a recent article in the Canton Citizen, Conservation Agent Regen Milani, working in collaboration with Town Planner Laura Smead, has estimated the project cost to be slightly north of $400,000. The town plans to seek 50 percent of the funding from the Community Preservation Committee and 50 percent through an appropriation at the 2020 annual town meeting. The project will include the extension and restoration of trails, parking area repaving and new parking spaces, a floating kayak launch installation, and improved ADA accessibility.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is only 34 years old and has a net worth of more than $60 billion (that’s billion with a “b”), making him the fifth richest person on earth, according to Forbes Magazine. Facebook now has over 2 billion members. Zuckerberg was recently slammed by Congress over the media’s impact on the 2020 presidential election. Facebook’s influence will be under a microscope in the coming months, and according to Zuckerberg, Facebook will take proper safeguards.
In case you missed it, John Nardozzi, accountant for the late state Senator and former Canton-based lawyer Brian A. Joyce, was convicted of tax fraud by a jury in federal court. He is scheduled to be sentenced on January 9, 2020, and will face up to five years in prison and fines up to $250,000. Prior to his death in September 2018, Joyce faced 113 counts, including racketeering, extortion, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion. According to the indictment, Joyce collected nearly $1 million in bribes and kickbacks from his clients while he was a state senator.

The Berish Properties/Kit Ching has petitioned the Canton Zoning Board of Appeals for a special permit and/or variance to allow a restaurant establishment with the service of food and beverages and live entertainment in a limited industrial district located at 955 Turnpike Street.

The Congregational Church of Canton, located at 1541 Washington Street, will hold its annual fall harvest fair on Saturday, November 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fair will feature many vendors and craft tables, a delicious breakfast and lunch menu, a visit with Santa, and much more.
The National Federation of State High School Associations reported that overall sports participation rates declined for the first time in 30 years. In the past 10 years, football participation is down 9.5 percent.

According to Banker & Tradesman, a weekly trade newspaper, the former Cumberland Farms headquarters site at 777 Dedham Street was sold to MA Canton Dedham, LLC for $6,200,000.
The Canton Traffic Committee plans to recommend a sidewalk on Randolph Street from Turnpike Street to the Blue Hills Regional High School.
Dedham teachers recently went on strike following nearly two years of contract talks that stalled. (A tentative deal was reached a few days later and the teachers returned to work.) Teacher strikes are illegal in Massachusetts. According to the Boston Globe, teachers in Dedham with a bachelor’s degree start out their first step pay at $51,307. The average salary for a Dedham teacher in 2017 topped $82,000, according to the state. The Dedham School Committee has offered a salary increase of 11.5 to 12.3 percent by the fourth year of the contract.
Finally, popular Foley’s Backstreet Grille on Pearl Street in Stoughton has been sold, and owner Dave Foley of Canton is retiring. The plan is to drop the name “Foley’s” and rename it The Backstreet Grille. Everything else should remain the same, including the workers.
