Canton schools launch new bus tracking app

By

Parents of elementary school students can now sign up for the new SafeStop app, which tracks bus routes in the morning and afternoon. The elementary routes are the first to be offered with routes for the middle and high schools offered soon. The app service is free for CPS families.

School Business Administrator Barry Nectow and Brett McCloud, CPS transportation and enrollment coordinator, made the announcement at the December 5 School Committee meeting.

A letter was sent home to families on December 6 containing a unique student ID number. The app can be set up on a mobile phone, table or home computer.

According to McCloud, the SafeStop app is “meant to help you plan around your student’s busy schedule, not to help you arrive at the bus stop at the last second. Your student should still plan to arrive five minutes early for their scheduled bus stop.”

The GPS system is updated every 30 seconds. Bus drivers will not have access to SafeStop while driving. All questions about the app should be directed to McCloud at mccloudb@cantonma.org.

Nectow said selectmen may need to meet with Eversource representatives to solve the problem.

* School Committee members were pleased with the submission of School Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller’s proposed operating budget for FY 2020-21, which calls for a 6.34 percent increase over FY20 and includes $2.8 million in new spending. The committee is reviewing the budget and will vote on the matter at its December 19 meeting …
