CHS hockey teams continue unbeaten starts
By Jay TurnerTwo weeks into the winter season, both Canton High ice hockey teams remain undefeated after combining for three wins and a tie over a recent four-day stretch.
The defending state champion boys team, whose last loss came in the 2018 postseason, extended their current unbeaten streak to 29 straight with a win Saturday night over Masconomet and a hard-fought 3-3 draw last Wednesday against Worcester-area powerhouse Shrewsbury.
The Colonials, who recently moved to Division 1 after winning three state titles from 2014 to 2018, gave the Bulldogs all they could handle in a high-intensity showdown at the Canton Ice House. Seniors Chris Lavoie (2 goals) and Johnny Hagan accounted for the scoring as Canton battled back from a pair of one-goal deficits to salvage a tie.
Against Masconomet, another strong program that is coming off an 18-3 season, the Bulldogs asserted control in an eventual 3-0 win at home, powered by another two goal outing from Lavoie — his third in as many games to open the season. Senior Timmy Kelleher notched his first of the campaign, and senior defenseman Jack Connolly continued his strong play on the blue line.
The girls team, meanwhile, continues to look utterly unstoppable as they improved to 4-0 with back-to-back shutout wins over Stoughton and Mansfield/Oliver Ames/Foxboro. The lady Bulldogs have yet to surrender a goal this season but have scored 19 of their own — an average of nearly five per contest.
Seven of those goals came last Wednesday at Asiaf Arena against winless Stoughton, and seven different players got in on the action, including Allie McCabe, Ava Bohane, Ellie Roberts, Faith Nelson, Kaitlyn McLaughlin, Olivia Maffeo, and Rose Malloy. Ellie Bohane and Payton McDonough both added a pair of assists while goalies Carolyn Durand and Vicki Revanche combined for the shutout in net.
Three days later, the Bulldogs traveled to Rodman Arena for a tough early season test against Mansfield/OA and they passed with flying colors, riding their dominant defense to an impressive 3-0 win. Freshman sensation Olivia Maffeo led the way for the visitors, scoring two goals and assisting on Maria Femia’s go-ahead goal in the second period. Durand also came up big in her fourth career start, turning away several early MOA chances and finishing with 14 saves for the game.
Both Canton teams had a few days off for the holidays and were due to resume action later this week, with the girls hosting Medfield Friday in the Ice House Invitational and the boys squaring off against fellow Ice House tenant Westwood on Saturday at 3:55 p.m.
