Bulldog sprint relay takes first at state invitational meet
By Mike BergerA 4×200 relay team consisting of CHS sprinters Deyontai Dennis, Cam Sanchez, Zach Goldstein, and Jonathan Chery out-ran a field of 19 other teams to capture first place at the Mass. State Track Coaches Association (MSTCA) Winter Invitational held last weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The Canton team’s time of 1:33.97 broke the school record in the event and gave them the second fastest time recorded in the state so far this season.
The sprints are a strength for this year’s boys track team, led by Chery, who recently set a new school record in the 55m with a 6.68 time against Sharon. At the MSTCA meet, Chery took fourth overall in the event out of 156 runners, while teammate Sanchez placed eighth.
Dennis also had a stellar day for the Bulldogs, placing fourth in the long jump and 16th out of 135 competitors in the 300m. Goldstein took ninth in the 300 and 18th in the long jump, and sophomores Andrew Butler and Kyle Downing turned in strong showings in the 300 and 600, respectively.
On the girls’ side, top performers for Canton at the MSTCA meet included Jada Taylor and Gabby Herivaux, who both placed inside the top 30 in the 55m out of 160-plus runners; Rosana Cho and Leah Murphy in the 300m; and Kayla Wong in the 600m.
In recent dual-meet action, both Canton squads fell to 0-2 after losing to Stoughton last week — 78-22 for the boys and 62-34 for the girls.
Standouts for the boys team included Downing, who won both the mile and two-miles races; Jack Hernon, who placed second and third in the same two races; Chery, who finished second in the 55m and third in the 300; and Elias Jabbour, who placed second in the 1,000m.
In the girls competition, senior shot-putter Bronwyn Mahoney continued her strong start with a career-best throw of 33 feet, 6.25 inches to place first in the event. Other winners included Wong in the mile and two-mile, Herivaux in the 300 (PR), and Cho in the long jump.
Despite having fewer participants than many of their Hockomock League counterparts, head coach Anna Amico said she is confident that the Bulldog athletes are “up to the challenge” and are “ready to make their mark.”
“They have been working hard and pushing each other to be the best they can be to start the season,” she said. “As in years past, we have solid athletes across every event, with our strength in the sprinting events.”
Team captains for this season are Nate Quan, Goldstein and Hernon for the boys and Cho and Mahoney for the girls.
