CHS boys track team shines at Division 4 state relays
By Jay TurnerMore school indoor records fell and three different boys relay teams made trips to the podium in another memorable week for the Canton High track and field program.
At last Thursday’s MSTCA Division 4 state relay meet, the Canton boys placed sixth overall out of more than 40 schools on the strength of runner-up finishes in the shuttle dash relay, 4×200, and long jump relay. Senior Zach Goldstein was a workhorse for the Bulldogs, competing on all three place-winning teams, while Jonathan Chery, Deyontai Dennis, Cam Sanchez, and Nate Quan each took part in two of the three events.
The shuttle dash relay team of Chery, Quan, Goldstein and Sanchez broke the school record with a time of 22.82 and finished second out of 41 teams behind only North Reading (22.63). The 4×200 team of Dennis, Goldstein, Sanchez and Chery also placed second, besting 45 other teams with a time of 1:34.39 — a full two seconds faster than third-place Dighton-Rehoboth.
Rounding out the trio of silver medalists was the long jump team of Dennis, Goldstein and Quan, who had a combined total of 57’5.5”, powered by Dennis’ top distance of 20’8.5”— second best out of more than 60 competitors.
The girls team, meanwhile, did not fare as well at the relays but did have one individual standout in senior Bronwyn Mahoney, who had the fifth longest throw in the shot put out of nearly 100 participants. The girls also turned in solid finishes in the 4×50 and 4×200, placing in the top half of the field in both events.
In other action last week, both Canton teams fell to 0-3 on the season but still produced their share of highlights — including 19 personal bests — in a dual-meet loss to North Attleboro on Wednesday.
The boys were led by Chery, who posted league-best times in both the 55m (6.58) and 300m (36.74) and also anchored the winning 4×200 relay team. Other winners for the Bulldogs included Quan in the long jump (19’1.5”), Elias Jabbour in the 1,000m (2:58.39), and Kyle Downing in the two-mile (10:56.61).
On the girls’ side, Mahoney dominated the competition in the shot put, delivering a league-best throw of 34’5”. Erika Boone placed first in the two-mile and second in the mile, and the relay team of Mia Walsh, Kiley Hanlon, Jayda Taylor and Gabby Herivaux won the 4×200.
This week, both Canton teams are due to face Foxboro and Milford in a tri-meet on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
