It was another productive week for both Canton High ice hockey teams as they combined for three wins and a draw while both reaching double-digit victories on the season.
The top-ranked boys team skated past Newburyport and longtime rival Franklin to extend their two-year unbeaten streak to 39 games and counting. Now at 11-0-2, the Bulldogs hold a comfortable lead in the Hockomock Davenport Division and have already punched their ticket back to the D2 south playoffs with eight games still to play.
Their latest win against the Panthers came at home in front of a packed house on an afternoon in which they also celebrated the 2010 state championship team. Several members of the title-winning squad were in attendance, including c Canton hockey legend Kevin Rooney, now with the National Hockey League’s New Jersey Devils.
Franklin actually scored first in the contest, but Canton asserted its dominance in the second and third periods en route to a 3-1 win. Goal scorers for the Bulldogs included Jack Connolly, Owen Lehane, and Dylan Coyne.
The girls team, meanwhile, bounced back from a recent tough stretch with an impressive win of its own on Saturday—4-1 over D1 Hingham on the road.
Freshman defenseman Olivia Maffeo was the star of the game as she racked up all four goals for the Bulldogs, giving her a team-leading 16 on the season. Olivia’s big sister, senior captain Alexa Maffeo, assisted on one of the goals, as did junior Lizzie Tassinari. Freshman goalie Carolyn Durand also had a good day in net, stopping 20 of the 21 shots she faced.
Now 10-1-2 overall, the lady Bulldogs were due to host Duxbury on Wednesday and will then welcome Stoughton to town on Saturday, February 1. The boys will also play on Saturday as they travel to Aleixo Arena to take on Taunton at 2 p.m.
