Derek Folan named finalist for assistant supt. position
By Mike BergerCanton High School Principal Derek Folan is the lone finalist to become the Canton Public Schools’ new assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller announced last week.
If Folan is offered and accepts the position, Fischer-Mueller would immediately begin a search for a new CHS principal. Folan would finish out the school year as principal.
Fischer-Mueller anticipates making a final decision before the School Committee’s next meeting on Thursday, February 27. On February 7, Folan made visits to each of the schools and met with each principal. He also attended two community forums and three staff forums.
In other major news from the February 6 School Committee meeting, members heard from several administrators regarding the details of the Canton Public Schools’ Safety and Security Plan.
The administrators detailed plans across three domains: facilities infrastructure safety and security, digital safety, and student safety and social, emotional and behavioral growth.
School Business Administrator Barry Nectow detailed plans for building and school bus security and Julie Shore, director of technology and digital learning, gave her recommendations for digital safety.
Also making presentations were Deb Bromfield, director of student services; CHS assistant principals Josh Fogel and Kelly Cavanaugh, GMS Assistant Principal Jim Spillane, Hansen Principal David Brauninger, and Assistant Director of Student Services Meghan Byrne.
All of the administrators who spoke agreed that they wanted every CPS student to feel safe in school, know they matter, and know that teachers and administrators are there to help them.
Shore said the district has safeguards in place to protect the district’s data and technologies to filter content and protect students while they are online. The district also provides education to students and families about online safety …
