4-way BOS race headlines 2020 town election ballot
By Jay TurnerA year after falling just three votes short in one of the closest town elections in Canton history, retired attorney Lisa Lopez has reentered the race for Board of Selectmen — joining two incumbents and another newcomer in a four-way race for two open seats.
Lopez, who ended up losing to Michael Loughran in a recount last year, will now join Joe Amrhein in challenging current selectmen Chris Connolly and Tom Theodore in the April 7, 2020 election. Connolly and Theodore will both be vying for a second term on the board after finishing one-two, respectively, in a crowded field in 2017.
All four BOS candidates returned their nomination papers prior to Tuesday’s deadline — ensuring that there will be a contested race for the town’s top executive body for the fourth consecutive year and fifth time in the last six years. (Amrhein returned his papers on the deadline day and no additional information about his candidacy was available as of press time.)
The rest of the ballot for the April 7 election will feature all uncontested races, albeit with a few newcomers sprinkled in among the incumbents.
Notable additions include Canton Police Lt. Charles Rae, who is running for a three-year School Committee seat, and Anjali Schutt, who is running for a two-year vacancy on the Board of Health.
Rae will run uncontested for the seat currently held by School Committee veteran Reuki Schutt, who has decided not to seek another term. Anjali Schutt, who is Reuki’s daughter, was recently appointed to a temporary position on the Board of Health to fill a vacancy and will seek the remaining two years on the seat last held by Ruth Slattery, who resigned this past fall.
The remaining candidates on the 2020 ballot are all incumbents and include Nichola Gallagher (School Committee), Gene Manning (Board of Assessors), David McCarthy (Planning Board), Dr. Julie Goodman (Board of Health), Sue Cogliano (Library Trustees), and George Comeau (Library Trustees). A third library trustee term is also expiring but did not draw any candidates and will be left open on the ballot.
