Lopez will add different skills, perspectives to BOS
By GuestDear Editor:
I have only known Lisa Lopez for a year, but I have admired her as a citizen of Canton for a long time. Over the years I had seen her speak at annual town meeting first as a proponent of the Community Preservation Act and then, after passage, as the chair of the Community Preservation Committee. I was always impressed by her ability to present information in a comprehensive, informative and understanding manner. She was well prepared and always able to answer questions that were posed to her in a thoughtful and respectful manner.
Last year I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa in person as she started her campaign for the Canton Board of Selectmen. My previous impressions were surpassed. I was struck by the depth and breadth of her knowledge about many issues facing the town of Canton, as well as her desire to ask questions, to learn more about the issues that were important to voters and her boundless energy and enthusiasm for the town. In addition to campaigning tirelessly, Lisa also took on the town pool replacement project; when she could have focused solely on her campaign, she was simultaneously dedicated to making sure the pool project moved forward regardless of how her campaign ended.
Several years ago, the town voted to move from a three-member Board of Selectmen to a five-member board. I voted in favor of it at annual town meeting because I felt that a larger group, with perhaps varied backgrounds and experiences, would lead to even better town policies. It is in that same vein that I wholeheartedly support Lisa Lopez for the Canton Board of Selectmen. In addition to being extremely well-qualified, she would bring a different background and set of experiences to the board. Productive and successful board discussions, whether in government or in business, requires a variety of perspectives for well-rounded decision-making.
The town of Canton, not unlike many other towns, is facing issues like increasing traffic, development and loss of open space, maintenance of roads and infrastructure, and rising costs of energy and services — especially in the areas of trash and recycling. A good leader is someone who is capable of communicating diverse thoughts and opinions, who is willing to listen to the opinions of others, and who is willing to work in a collaborative manner towards the best outcome. We need someone with a different set of leadership skills and background to contribute new ideas and a varied perspective to reach better informed decisions.
For all of the reasons stated above, I am voting for Lisa Lopez for the Canton Board of Selectmen on Tuesday, April 7. I urge you to do the same.
Sincerely,
Christine Smith
