By the Numbers: Salute to the champs
By Jay TurnerBoth Canton High ice hockey teams were crowned co-state champions last week following the MIAA’s decision to cancel the state finals due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In celebration of another sensational winter season, the Canton Citizen proudly presents 20 remarkable facts about the 2020 champs.
1. During the 2019-20 season, CHS hockey teams posted a combined record of 40-2-7 (.888), including a perfect 7-0 mark in the playoffs.
2. Among boys teams, Canton led the entire state with 21 wins, marking the second straight year that they have accomplished this feat (46-1-4 combined).
3. The boys ran their unbeaten streak to 43 straight games before losing to Lincoln-Sudbury on February 12. It marked their first loss since the 2018 sectional playoffs — a span of 706 days.
4. Among girls teams, CHS tied for the fewest losses in the state (1) along with Wellesley and Austin Prep.
5. The Canton boys scored 106 goals in 25 games this season, including 58 over their final 12 contests. In their four playoff games, they outscored opponents 20-3.
6. The CHS girls surrendered 17 goals in 24 games, including just 4 over their final 12 contests. They had 14 shutouts and allowed more than one goal only 4 times all season.
7. Since 2009, Canton has the most state hockey finals appearances in Massachusetts with 7, including 4 for the boys and 3 for the girls. Three other schools are tied with 6 apiece: Malden Catholic, Arlington Catholic, and Wellesley.
8. During the 2020 playoffs, three different CHS players had a 4-goal game: Chris Lavoie vs. Whitman-Hanson (March 3), Olivia Maffeo vs. Ursuline (March 4), and Johnny Hagan vs. Bishop Feehan (March 8). Lavoie also had a hat trick in the D2 south playoff opener vs. Taunton.
9. For the season, Lavoie led the boys team with 31 goals while Olivia Maffeo, a freshman defenseman, paced the girls with 33 goals. Both players also led their respective leagues in that category.
10. Hagan was the Hockomock League’s overall points leader and was named league MVP. He tallied 18 goals and 31 assists for the season and finished his career with 160 points.
11. Hagan was also a faceoff machine this season with a total of 349 faceoffs won and a 61.8 percent success rate.
12. Alexa Maffeo led the Hockomock League with 16 assists and was second on the team in plus/minus (+38).
13. Besides the Maffeo sisters, other leading point scorers for the lady Bulldogs included Maria Femia (17), Tess Khoury (16), Lizzie Tassinari (15), and Meg Aldrich (13).
14. For the boys, in addition to Hagan and Lavoie, seven other players had 10 or more points: Timmy Kelleher (23), Eamon Kelly (17), Shane Marshall (17), Ronan O’Mahony (13), Owen Lehane (12), Jack Connolly (12), and Colby Ciffolillo (12).
15. A total of 36 players scored a varsity goal for the Bulldogs this season — 18 boys and 18 girls.
16. O’Mahony led the Bulldogs with a whopping 28 blocked shots — 12 more than the runner-up in that category (Owen Lehane).
17. Both CHS goalies led the Hockomock League in the two most important statistical categories. Freshman Carolyn Durand finished with a .957 save percentage and a microscopic 0.71 goals against average while senior Joe Cammarata had a .931 save percentage and a stellar 1.29 GAA.
18. Both CHS coaches recorded milestones this season with Dennis Aldrich notching his 100th career victory for the girls team and Brian Shuman surpassing 250 wins for the boys team.
19. The CHS boys will graduate 13 seniors: Dom Cammarata, Joe Cammarata, Colby Ciffolillo, Jack Connolly, Tommy Ghostlaw, Johnny Hagan, Timmy Kelleher, Chris Lavoie, Owen Lehane, Shane Marshall, Ronan O’Mahony, Declan Pfeffer and Tommy Vaughan.
20. The CHS girls will bid farewell to six seniors: Meg Aldrich, Alexa Maffeo, Rose Malloy, Kaitlyn McLaughlin, Vicky Revanche and Caroline Tourgee.
