BOH orders stop to local construction projects

By

On Monday, April 6, the Canton Board of Health instructed selectmen and the building inspector to stop construction on several local projects, including the Bolivar Pool reconstruction project; renovations of the rolling mill building at the Paul Revere Heritage Site (restaurant and town meeting space); and a clubhouse addition at the Milton Hoosic Golf Course.

Selectmen Chairman Chris Connolly, who serves on the COVID-19 Emergency Town Committee, said the BOH permitted Tuesday, April 7, to be a cleanup day for these projects before they cease activity. These stop orders do not affect the condominium project at the Paul Revere Heritage Site nor the state-funded Metropolis Rink. The BOH also allowed private landscapers to continue to work if one person alone operates a vehicle and the workers adhere to the six-foot social distancing advisory.

As of Friday, April 10, Canton had 92 positive cases of COVID-19. The state of Massachusetts had 20,974 confirmed cases, including 2,216 in Norfolk County. There have been 599 deaths reported statewide as a result of the virus.

Connolly said the COVID-19 Committee wants to be as transparent as possible regarding the number of local cases and updates the case count daily on the town website. The selectmen’s Advisory Report of April 3 said residents can do their part to reduce the number of cases in Canton by staying home and avoiding unnecessary social gatherings. When residents must go out, it is important to maintain social distancing and experts are now recommending people consider covering their nose and mouth with a mask, scarf or bandana.

Selectmen said it’s important for residents to understand that although transmission of the virus is highest when someone has symptoms, recent research is showing that it can be transmitted by someone who is asymptomatic. The model’s latest projections estimate that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Massachusetts could range from 47,000 to 172,000 (or 0.7 percent to 2.5 percent of the total state population). The models show hospitalizations would potentially peak between April 10-20.
