The Medicare payroll tax for 2020 is 2.9 percent, split between worker and employer. Medicare is 5 percent of the federal budget.
In 2018, nearly 33 percent of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents had a blood alcohol level over .08 percent. Most states consider that intoxicated. The 6,590 pedestrian deaths in 2019 made it the deadliest year since 1982, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association. While the survey made no direct connection to cell phone distractions, pedestrian deaths did begin to climb as the number of smartphone users grew from 50 million in 2009 to 285 million in 2018.
The U.S. Senate’s Special Committee on Aging reported in 2019 that Americans 65 and older lose roughly $3 billion to fraud each year. Scammers from around the world tend to target older Americans in particular because they have wealth, tend to be trusting, and may be less sophisticated about technology.
According to AARP Magazine, 67 percent of taxpayers got a refund last year, receiving an average of $2,860 from the IRS after filing. The magazine goes on to say that you should stash your refund in a Roth IRA where investment growth is tax-free and all withdrawals are free of federal taxes if you are age 59 1/2 or older and have had the account for five years.
Women make up 66 percent of the nearly 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s.
In Massachusetts, 33.7 percent of adults 65 and over in fair health or better reported no physical activity other than what their jobs required in the past 30 days. Looks like the state has too many couch potatoes, and this was before the coronavirus took over our lives.
