Tate, Marcia R.
By Canton CitizenMrs. Marcia R. Tate, 86, of Canton, passed away after a brief illness May 9 at Norwood Hospital.
Born in Newark, NJ, she was raised in Belleville, NJ, and graduated from Allegheny College in 1955. She then completed a publishing course at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, which in turn led to a job at the Harvard University Press and ultimately Doubleday Co. in New York City. Marcia worked for 13 years as a book designer, doing layout and jacket design, including artwork. She turned down a job working at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to come live in Sharon with her husband, where he practiced dentistry. There she was a member of the Sharon Junior Fortnightly.
Eventually they moved to Canton and after raising her children she worked at the Canton Town Hall in the Building Department for almost 17 years, retiring in 2002. She was a 50-year member of the United Church of Christ in Canton where she served on the Board of Deacons and as senior deaconess and was on various other committees. Marcia also was a member of the Canton Garden Club, Cedarcrest Group, and the Canton Historical Society, working on many projects and campaigns for all of these groups.
Beloved wife of Dr. Harold W. Tate Jr. (Ben). Mother of John A. Tate and his wife, Letiana, of Canton and Matthew J. Tate, also of Canton. Grandmother of Mia Tate of Canton. Daughter of the late Herbert F. Lambrecht and Lula M. (Thomas) Lambrecht. Sister-in-law of Barbara Tate Cash of Canton and aunt to her children, Joanie, Jonathan and Kersten.
At the moment, all services will be private at the family’s request. Burial Canton Corner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Congregational Church of Canton, 1541 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.
