Town cancels July 4 events; still offering Rec. programs
By Mike BergerThe current state restrictions on large gatherings due to COVID-19 means that there will be no town-sponsored events this year in celebration of the July 4th holiday. This includes both the annual July 4th road race and the July 4th celebration and gala fireworks display.
The road race, a Canton summer tradition started by Joe DeFelice, had been held every year since its founding in 1968. Last year, for the 52nd running, race organizers ushered in a new era as it was moved to an earlier date and the distance was reduced from five miles to a 5K (3.1 miles).
The fireworks display, another popular local draw, had been held for the past several years on the grounds of the Irish Cultural Centre and usually included a live concert and activities for children. Despite the cancelation of this year’s festivities, the Fire Department is urging residents not to use fireworks at home, either on July 4 or any other time this summer (see related item on page x.)
The news is more promising for summer recreation programs and the eventual opening of the new town pool.
Liz Francis, Canton’s director of Parks & Recreation, recently sent out information regarding the revised camp regulations from Governor Charlie Baker and state health officials. Notable changes from past years include a limit on the number of participants, schedule revisions, a requirement that staff and children wear masks if they cannot socially distance, and the stipulation that no field trips are allowed.
Francis said the intent of the communication was to notify families of any changes and let them know that the Canton Board of Health and Parks & Recreation are developing safety protocols to protect against COVID-19.
Francis said the programs will look different and some traditional activities such as Capture the Flag will not be allowed.

Meanwhile, the town has announced the reopening of all town parks and fields, including the CHS turf field, tennis and basketball courts, with the following restrictions: no gatherings of 10 or more people; mandatory face coverings if you are unable to social distance; no shared equipment; and only non-contact sports and activities are allowed.
Additionally, all town playgrounds have been reopened and will be cleaned weekly. Visitors are urged to maintain social distancing when possible and to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer before and after using playground equipment.
Regarding the town pool renovations, work has resumed after being halted for a period of several weeks due to the COVID-19 emergency. Francis said under the best-case scenario, a public viewing could be held in late August or early September with the splash pad possibly opening for children in September.
