News Notes: CPD welcomes 4 new police officers

Four new Canton police officers graduated from the recruit officer course at the Police Academy in Reading on July 1 and are now going through field training until the end of August. Joining the CPD ranks are (above l-r) Pat Ward, Ben Berkowitz, Mike McDonald, and Sean Klimas. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said all four officers are life-long Canton residents and graduates of Canton High School. McDonald, Berkowitz, and Ward have college degrees and Klimas served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and is earning credits toward a bachelor’s degree. McDonald also served for four years in the U.S. Coast Guard. Three of the four graduates come from police-oriented families. Klimas’s father is a State Police sergeant; Berkowitz’s father is current Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz; and Ward’s father is a Quincy Police sergeant.
Norwood Hospital still closed after flash flood
As of Tuesday, July 7, Norwood Hospital remained closed with no projected date for reopening as it continues to recover from a devastating flash flood on June 28. According to a communication from Norwood Hospital, the top priority is reopening the Emergency Department. In the days ahead, the hospital will begin to outline a timeframe to bring additional services back online. Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody said if residents are in medical distress, they should call 911 or visit an emergency room at an alternate hospital in the region. Area hospitals include Beth Israel Deaconess-Milton, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham. In addition, Norwood Urgent Care, located at 120 Boston Providence Highway in Norwood, is open to walk-ins.
