Phishing is a type of scam. It is the fraudulent practice of making phone calls or sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies, like Amazon or Verizon, in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information such as passwords and credit card numbers. This is how they get you: The fake company will call or send an email stating that thousands of dollars of purchases have been made to your credit card account, with the last sentence stating, “If you have not placed this order, call our fraud protection team at 1-360-234-2571 (which is the actual number that MAC was given in a phishing email he recently received, but thankfully did not call). If you get a call or email like this, it is most likely a phishing scam. Never call the phone number left on your voicemail or given in an email. Only call the number on the back of your credit card or look up the company’s actual fraud protection phone number. Be careful! These people are very sneaky.
