Award winning pumpkin
By Canton CitizenIn just his third season as an amateur pumpkin grower, Canton’s Matt Tate managed to shatter his previous best mark with a jaw-dropping specimen that tipped the scales at over 1,600 pounds. Tate went on to win third place at the Woodstock (CT) weigh-off, which is usually held at the Woodstock Fair but was relocated to the organizer’s house due to COVID-19.
Estimating the weight to be around 1,300 pounds based on circumference, Tate was surprised to be told on arrival that he had what looked to be a 1,600-pound pumpkin. “I thought he was just teasing me,” he said, “but sure enough my pumpkin weighed 1,606.5 pounds!”
Tate said another highlight of the day was the reaction he received on the drive to Woodstock and back. “Just about every other car people would smile, cheer, take pictures of and point at the pumpkin in the back of my truck,” he said. “It was really fun to see so many people enjoying my pumpkin!”
