The competition was tougher against a feisty Sharon squad, but a strong Canton offense and steady defense still carried the day for the undefeated CHS girls soccer team.

The Bulldogs went on to beat the Eagles twice last week — 3-0 at home on October 14 and 3-1 two days later at Sharon despite rainy conditions.

Through four games, the Canton girls stood atop the Hockomock Davenport Division at 4-0 and led the entire league in scoring with a combined 22 goals. Their three goals allowed through that stretch were also the second fewest behind fellow unbeaten Franklin.

Friday’s contest with Sharon proved to be the stiffest test for the lady Bulldogs so far. “It was another tough win today in the pouring rain,” said head coach Idris Senyonjo. “We had to dig deep for this one. Sharon put up a good fight. We went a goal up early, but Sharon was able to equalize off a few errors of our own. It was tied for most of the game, but today the girls showed me something every coach wants to see within their team. That was the willingness to fight and come together collectively to ensure we won the game. I was very proud of them today.”

Scoring goals in the win were Mekhala Costello, Olivia Rodman and Gabriella Herivaux with assists recorded by Sarai Costello (2) and Emily McCabe.

In Wednesday’s contest, Canton started and finished strong and withstood a Sharon rally in the middle portion of the game. Rodman opened the scoring with a booming, long distance shot assisted by Mekhala Costello. Mia Gilmore then led Herivaux with a nice pass as the junior forward increased the Canton lead to 2-0 in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, Elisa Diletizia lifted a booming shot for the lady Bulldogs’ third score with an assist from Mekhala Costello.

Senyonjo said the team looked tired through the middle part of the game, which he attributed at least partly to a lack of practices leading up to the contest, including a school-wide cancelation of athletic activities the day before due to a COVID-19 precaution.

The only other negative piece of news was the loss of starting junior goaltender Elyse Broderick, who will miss the remainder of the season with a major leg injury. Stepping up in Broderick’s place and playing well has been sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Staffiere.

In the October 14 contest, three sets of Canton sisters started in the game with three in the midfield and three in the back. They were senior Mia Gilmore and freshman Ava Gilmore; senior Sarai Costello and freshman Mekhala Costello; and sophomore Emily McCabe and junior Allie McCabe.

This week, the Bulldogs were due to play another home-and-home series against division foe North Attleboro (2-1-2) with two more games to follow next Monday and Wednesday against Oliver Ames (1-0-4).
