Rare October storm dumps over 5 inches of snow

The town of Canton received over five inches of snow in a rare fall snowstorm last Friday, October 30. DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta sent sanding crews out in the mid-morning and plowing operations began Friday afternoon and finished around 9:35 p.m. In all, 20 members of the DPW took part in snow removal operations with total costs estimated at $20,000 to $25,000. An additional $12,000 was spent on associated tree removal operations as crews cleared away more than 40 limbs and branches. Trotta also reported a hit and run accident at the Dedham/Washington Street intersection that knocked down the traffic light opposite Dedham Street. Pine Ridge Technologies was called in to reset the light and restore power. Trotta estimated the costs between $20,000 and $25,000 for Friday’s snowstorm operation and $12,000 for the tree removal on Saturday.

CFD responds to highway accident

Canton emergency crews responded to a motor vehicle crash on I-93 North during the snowstorm on Friday, October 30, at around 10:30 a.m. Fire Chief Charles Doody said a tractor trailer had collided with a minivan and landed in a ditch. The driver of the tractor trailer was transported to the hospital by Norwood EMTs. Canton EMTs evaluated multiple occupants in the minivan but none required transport. Two lanes of the highway were shut down for two hours while tow crews removed the tractor trailer unit and minivan. Doody said the accident appeared to be weather related.

Business owner charged in alleged party incident

A Canton business owner is facing criminal charges in connection with a party held inside a commercial property on Route 138 last month. The suspect, Scott Santos, 38, of Canton, allegedly hosted a gathering of more than 100 people at 973 Turnpike Street and faces charges of disorderly conduct, furnishing alcohol without a license, and violating the governor’s order on gathering limits. Public Health Director Barbara Reardon also issued Santos a civil citation. Police made the discovery of what Chief Ken Berkowitz characterized as an illegal night club after responding to a report of a fight on the property in the early morning hours on Saturday, October 24. Further inspection revealed that there was a bar and a dance floor, and it was later determined that the building was being illegally rented out as a function hall. Detectives were told that patrons were charged a cover to enter building. Building Commissioner Ed Walsh was notified and closed the property down due to numerous safety and zoning violations …
