Police arrest 2 in separate assault incidents
By Mike BergerIn separate incidents last week, Canton police arrested two individuals and charged them with various assault offenses. The first call came in around 2 p.m. on Monday, November 23, and involved a fight between two men in the woods near the I-95/Dedham Street construction site. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the suspect, identified as Harold Kevin Perkins, 36, of Canton, allegedly picked up a rock and threw it at the other party. Rafferty said police are unsure as to what started the fight. Perkins was charged with assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon. No one was seriously hurt in the incident and no construction workers were involved.
The second incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 27, at the McDonald’s restaurant on Washington Street. David Keating, 21, of Sharon, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime. Rafferty said a McDonald’s employee had spoken to some people in the lot about smashing bottles and the suspect allegedly responded with threatening statements and then lifted his shirt to reveal what appeared to be a black handgun. Rafferty said the weapon turned out to be a pellet gun but “looked very real.”
Fire damages Neponset St. home
On Sunday evening, November 29, at around 5:30 p.m., a large contingent of Canton firefighters and police officers responded to a house fire at 254 Neponset Street. First responders reported seeing a visible fire coming from the second floor and Fire Lt. Tom Norton said firefighters quickly and successfully attacked the fire from inside the home, containing it to one room. Canton firefighters, with assistance from Norwood and Sharon firefighters, checked for fire extension and ventilated the residence. Norton said investigators suspect that the fire was started by an unattended lit candle. The residents were unable to remain in their home and are staying with friends. Traffic in the vicinity of the home was detoured for about an hour.
In other Fire Department calls, Norton said the rain and windstorm on Monday night did not produce much action for the CFD. They did receive one call for wires down on Old Randolph Street that was quickly addressed by Eversource. In other news, Interim EMS Director Leo Reardon reported that the CFD responded to three opioid calls during the month of November.
