This past summer, Canton’s Milton-Hoosic Club was chosen as the 26th best 9-hole golf course in the world by Golf magazine. With input from the magazine’s 88-member Top 100 Courses ranking panel, its editors, architects from around the world, and select other short-course aficionados, Golf published its first ever ranking of the world’s greatest 9-hole courses. Hundreds of courses from around the world were considered for this prestigious honor.

The inaugural ranking focused exclusively on stand-alone 9-hole courses — in part to show that “solo niners … are quite viable financial entities in and of themselves. And every bit as thrilling as a traditional course.”

“A good 9-holer,” notes golf coach Mike Dutton in the article, “knows what it is — intimate, local, welcoming — and avoids what it isn’t: pretentious, punitive, grand. Like Cliff Notes or a nap, a 9-holer fits the bill when you want less to be more. And like the bar in Cheers, it should be a place where everybody knows your name.”

The Hoosic course was designed by the famous Scotsman Willie Park Jr. Aside from being known as a superior golf course architect, Park Jr. was also an accomplished golfer, having won two British Open Championships. Among the 150-plus courses he designed around the world are Sunningdale (old course) in the U.K., ranked 24th in the world, and Maidstone in East Hampton, New York.

“It’s been an honor to help restore this golf course, and recapture the work and original intent of preeminent golf course architect Willie Park Jr.,” stated Chris Cyr, golf course superintendent at the Milton-Hoosic Club. “The membership has been wonderful in their support of moving the master plan forward. Having a golf course with this kind of history and design pedigree is an incredible asset to the town of Canton and its surrounding communities.”

The Milton-Hoosic Club is a well-established family country club whose history dates back to 1891. The club features a full complement of resources that some of the bigger courses have — golf, swimming, and tennis — but with a more intimate feel. They are particularly known for their junior programs where kids can learn to swim, golf and play tennis with other kids and remain friends forever.

Mike Nemetz, president of the Hoosic board, adds, “We were all celebrating our new clubhouse only to have this award add to that celebration. Our success as a club is due to the great team we have working together every day to make a positive difference for our members. Chris and the Greens Committee have worked very hard restoring the course and we couldn’t be happier for them.”
