Canton High gymnasts top Sharon for season’s first win
By Mike BergerThe Canton High School varsity gymnastics team celebrated its first win of the 2021 season with a seven-point victory over Sharon last week (123-116).
Co-head coach Jenn Abbott said many factors contributed to Canton’s win over the Eagles and their point total of 123 was the team’s highest so far this season—besting their previous season high of 122 established in their season opener.
“We had a strong showing on beam and bars with no falls and the girls stuck their landings on the vault and floor,” Abbott said.
Elissa Praik posted an outstanding score of 9.2 on the vault and followed that up with an 8.2 on floor exercise. Emily MacKay scored a 7.1 on bars and Emma Berardi added an 8.1 on the balance beam.
In other recent action, the Bulldogs competed hard but came up short in losses to both King Philip Regional (135.6-115.35) and North Attleboro (137.65-117.5).
In the match against KP, high scorers for Canton included Berardi and MacKay on vault (8.4), Abby Silvasy on bars (7.3) and beam (7.1), and Jenna Morgan on floor exercise (7.7).
Morgan had the highest score in the loss to North Attleboro with an 8.4 on vault, while MacKay paced the team in both the floor exercise (8.1) and bars (7.0). Praik was the team’s leading scorer on beam with a 7.15.
Now 1-4 overall, Canton will look to get back into the win column when it takes on Oliver Ames on Sunday, January 31, at 7 p.m. at Metro South Gymnastics Academy. The Bulldogs will then close out the season with meets against Taunton on February 6 and Franklin on February 12.
