Lawrence “Larry” Vincent Powers, 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Plymouth while surrounded by family after a courageous battle with melanoma.

He was born on January 27, 1949, as the fourth child of Albert and Jeanette Powers of Canton. After graduating from Canton High School in 1966, he joined the Navy where he earned the ranking ABH3 and served in the Vietnam War. On July 20, 1969, he was part of the recovery crew of Apollo 11 from aboard the USS Hornet CVS12. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, Larry worked for Texas Instruments, Cavallo Construction, and elevator construction. He married his wife of 50 years, Deborah, in 1971. That same year he joined Massport Fire Rescue. He retired from his career at Massport in 2006 after serving his final two years as the deputy chief.

Larry was the loving husband of Deborah L. Arnold Powers of Plymouth and the father of Sunni C. Powers Apicella of Plymouth. He was the “Appy” of Vanessa J. Mallard-White and Noah R. Mallard-White of Plymouth. He also leaves behind Nicole E. McCleary to whom he was like a grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert V. Powers of Canton and Jeanette L. Vincent Powers of Hyde Park. He is also predeceased by his sister Maureen L. Powers Stringer of Stoughton. He is survived by his siblings Philip J. Powers of Canton, Jeanette M. Powers Spence of Canton, Richard A. Powers of Plymouth and his wife, Clare, Steve P. Powers of Bridgewater and his wife, Laureen, and Albert N. Powers of Worcester. Larry is also survived by his best friend Steve Willis, along with many friends, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnephews.

Larry was known for his endless patience, kindness, and happiness. He will be forever remembered as a humble, gentle, and selfless soul who left everyone feeling better for having known him.

A period of visitation will take place on Thursday, February 25, from 4-7 p.m. at the Davis Life Celebration Funeral Home, 619 State Road in Plymouth (Manomet). A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 26, at 11 a.m. in St. Bonaventure Church, 803 State Road in Plymouth (Manomet). Interment will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave. in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Larry’s memory can be made to www.magicalmoon.org/donate.
