CHS volleyball bounces back with win vs. Eagles
By Jay TurnerSenior Angie Elias delivered another sensational all-around performance and the CHS girls volleyball team showed poise under pressure as they bounced back to beat Sharon in four sets last Wednesday at home.
The Eagles, who have the look of a team on the rise, defeated the Bulldogs in straight sets last Monday for their first volleyball win against Canton in nearly two decades. Sharon then came to Canton two days later and made a strong early statement with a 25-19 opening set win. But the Bulldogs, who are the defending state champions for a reason, were able to regroup and went on to reel off three consecutive set wins to seal the match on their home court (25-20, 25-14, 25-23).
Elias, who was one of the few bright spots in their previous loss to the Eagles, responded with an even better performance on Wednesday as she racked up a team-high 17 kills to go along with 19 digs and two aces.
Fellow senior standout Liz Bickett also had an excellent all-around performance in the win, recording 11 kills and 19 digs.
Other key contributors for Canton included setters Jackie Morrissey and Taylor Reynolds, who combined for 32 assists, and defensive specialists Steph Trendell and Simela Donovan, who combined for 27 digs and seven aces.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 overall and currently sit in second place in the Davenport Division behind unbeaten Oliver Ames (5-0).
The Canton girls are scheduled to play two matches this week against North Attleboro and will then prepare to face OA twice in a home-and-home series that could very well decide the division. Canton then wraps up its Fall 2 campaign with two matches against Foxboro on Monday and Wednesday, April 5 and 7.
