Boys track off to strong start with wins vs. Sharon, NA
By Mike BergerHigh placements by Jonathan Chery, Deyontai Dennis and Kyle Downing helped propel the CHS boys indoor track team to two division wins last week against Sharon and North Attleboro. The boys team defeated the Eagles 74-7 and edged the Red Rocketeers 43-39 in the virtually held meets.
The girls team went 1-1 against the same two opponents, dominating Sharon 67.5-14.5 but falling to North Attleboro 44-37.
In the boys’ competition, Chery was instrumental in the sprints, winning both the 100m and 200m against both squads while also anchoring the winning 4×100 relay along with Leo Fabrizio, Matt Quan and Sean Sullivan. In the individual 100 meters, Chery set a new personal best with a time of 11 seconds.
Dennis also shined in multiple events for the Bulldogs, winning the 400m and high jump against both teams. Downing added two wins in the mile, placed second against Sharon in both the 800m and high jump, and third against NA in the latter two events.
Other top performers for the boys team included Nam Pham, who recorded top-three finishes in the 100m and 200m and won the shot put versus Sharon; Jack Hernon, who took second and third in the mile; Graham Stemm, who placed second against both schools in the 400m; and Sullivan, who won the 110 hurdles against the Eagles.
On the girls’ side, Canton scored a whopping nine first-place finishes against Sharon, led by Maddie Rousseau in the 100m, 100 hurdles and high jump. Other winners against the Eagles included Kiley Hanlon (200m), Maria Femia (400m), Kiara Cerruti (mile), Emma Massih (shot put); the 4×100 relay team of Gabby Herivaux, Jayda Taylor, Leah Murphy and Hanlon; and the 4×400 team of Lauren Sullivan, Cerruti, Annie Hoban and Femia.
Topping the field against North Attleboro were Rousseau in the 100m, Hanlon in the 200m, Cerruti in the mile, and Canton’s 4×400 relay team. Cerruti also took second in the 800m and Corrine Campbell placed second in the mile.
Also scoring points for Canton last week were Murphy (100 hurdles, high jump), Herivaux (200m, high jump), Hoban (400m), Maeve Morrissey (shot put), Taylor (100 hurdles), Marie Messinger (mile), and Annie Dunn (shot put).
