CHS girls track team shines in win vs. Stoughton
By Mike BergerBehind 26 season bests and a slew of top finishes, the CHS girls track team made their way back into the win column last week with a 62-38 victory over Stoughton.
The boys team also competed hard but came up 10 points short against the undefeated Black Knights, falling to 3-2 on the season.
An elated head coach Anna Amico said of the girls’ big win, “It was a complete team effort with many different athletes stepping up and earning valuable points.”
The difference for the lady Bulldogs were a sweep of the high jump and seven first-place finishes, including two each by Kiara Cerruti (800m, mile) and Maddie Rousseau (200m, long jump).
Also scoring wins for the girls team were Kiley Hanlon in the 100m, Marie Messinger in the two-mile, and Leah Murphy in the high jump.
Hanlon added second- and third-place finishes in the 200 and high jump, respectively, while Jayda Taylor took third in both the 100m and 100-meter hurdles. Other point scorers included Maria Femia, 2nd, 400m; Corrine Campbell, 2nd, two-mile; Murphy 2nd, 100 hurdles; Rousseau, 2nd, high jump; Emma Massih, 2nd, shot put; Maeve Morrissey, 3rd, shot put; and Lauren Sullivan, 3rd, 800m.
Despite the boys’ loss to Stoughton, Amico said she was proud of the team’s effort. “They battled and every race was competitive,” she said. “With only 13 athletes competing our boys battled until the very end. It was a great high school meet.”
Jonathan Chery won two events (100 and 200) and placed third in the high jump. Deyontai Dennis won the 400 and placed second in the long jump, while Jack Hernon won the mile and placed second in the 800.
Other point scorers for Canton included Kyle Downing, 2nd, mile and two-mile; Matt Quan, 2nd, 110 hurdles; Nam Pham, 2nd, shot put; Jay Kelleher, 3rd, 800m; Graham Stemm, 3rd, two-mile; and Sean Sullivan, 3rd, 110 hurdles.
The Fall 2 track season will wrap up today with Canton competing alongside Attleboro as part of the Hockomock League Championships. Each league team will compete against a school from the opposing division and the results will be compiled and shared to determine overall league winners.
