Joint Town Statement on Anti-Hate

By

The following statement was recently approved by the Canton Select Board, Canton Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee (CDEI) and Canton School Committee:

We come together to affirm that hate has no home in Canton. In light of recent events, in particular the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, united we:

* Condemn acts of racism, violence, and hate in all forms

* Foster a welcoming and inclusive community that encourages cooperation and respect among all persons in Canton.

* Seek to celebrate and embrace the traditions and values of the groups within our community and advocate for the human and civil rights of all individuals in the Town of Canton

* Work to ensure all individuals in the town of Canton enjoy equal opportunity to participate in and enjoy life in our town, regardless of their race, color, ethnicity, religious beliefs, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, and mental or physical ability.

Please visit the commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Asian American Commission resources page at aacommission.org to learn more and report incidents of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate in Massachusetts. Canton stands against all types of hate. For additional resources for all communities, please see the MA Civil Rights Division’s Protecting Civil Rights page (mass.gov/protecting-civil-rights).

The Canton Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (CDEI) is a newly formed committee and welcomes all community members to join us. We recognize the cultural richness of Canton’s diversity as a critical element that characterizes a healthy and vibrant community and we encourage participation from all. We want you to know your voice matters; we want to hear from you. Contact us at facebook.com/CantonDiversityEquityandInclusion or CDEIcommittee@gmail.com.

For situations within Canton Public Schools, please contact your building principal or Director of Student Services Dianna Mullen, who will refer the report to the building-based civil rights officer.
