Three CHS track athletes crowned league champs
By Mike BergerThe results are in from this year’s virtual Hockomock League Indoor Track Championships and the Bulldogs are proud to celebrate three league champions: Jonathan Chery (200m), Deyontai Dennis (high jump), and Maddie Rousseau (100m hurdles).
Overall, the boys team finished fifth and the girls finished eighth among 12 league teams. Both Canton teams had several finishers place in the top eight in various events.
Chery, last year’s state champion in the 55-meter dash, led the field in the 200 with a time of 22.9 seconds. He also finished second in the 100m with a best time of 11.2 seconds.
Dennis also had a sensational finish to the Fall 2 season as he won a tiebreaker in the high jump to claim the title and finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.3 seconds) in just his second time ever competing in that event. He added a third-place finish in the long jump to round out a career day.
Rousseau, Canton’s top female track performer, was similarly impressive in the girls’ competition, not only winning the 100 hurdles (15.3 seconds) but also finishing as the runner up in the 200m (26.7 seconds).
Other top finishers for Canton at the league meet included Kiley Hanlon, who placed fourth in the 200 and eighth in the 100; Kiara Cerruti, who placed seventh in the mile; Emma Massih, who took seventh in the shot put; and Marie Messinger, who ran eighth in the two-mile.
In the relay events, the Canton boys took sixth in the 4×100 behind a team of Leo Fabrizio, Mo Arugollu, Sean Sullivan and Matt Quan, and the girls placed seventh in the same event behind Jayda Taylor, Hanlon, Leah Murphy and Rousseau. The boys 4×400 team of Graham Stemm, Kyle Downing, Jay Kelleher, and Jack Hernon also had a solid performance, placing seventh overall.
