News Notes: Town to hold two pre-ATM meetings

Pre-town meeting Zoom sessions scheduled for May 10 & 12
The town of Canton has scheduled two upcoming Zoom meetings to help residents prepare for the 2021 annual town meeting, scheduled for Saturday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. The first public session, to be held on May 10 from 7-8 p.m., will cover the Municipal Energy Aggregation program. The second session, scheduled for May 12 from 7-9 p.m., will provide an overview of the ATM warrant. Zoom links can be accessed via the town website.
Car fire causes disruption at CHS dismissal
Canton police and firefighters were called to douse a car fire outside the Rodman Administration Building on Thursday, April 29, at around 2:25 p.m. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the car had mechanical issues, which caused it to overheat and ignite. No injuries were reported. Rafferty said the fire was more of a disruption to the dismissal of Canton High School students. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller told the School Committee that the car fire was the reason that administrators were calling into the Zoom meeting from their homes.
Outdoor water restrictions now in effect
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), through its Water Management Act permitting process, has imposed limits on the amount of water towns are allowed to withdraw from their respective watersheds. In accordance with the town of Canton’s water withdrawal permit, the town must implement a mandatory outdoor water conservation measure from May 1 through September 30. The permit stipulates that nonessential outdoor watering must be limited to no more than two times per week and must take place between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. The following uses are subject to mandatory restriction:
* Irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems
* Washing of vehicles except in a commercial car wash or for operator safety
* Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways or sidewalks, except as necessary to apply surface treatments such as paint, stain, or stucco.
Uses that may be allowed during mandatory restriction include:
* Irrigation to establish a new lawn and plantings during the months of May and September
* Irrigation of public parks and recreation fields by automatic sprinklers outside the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Irrigation of gardens, flowers and ornamental plants by means of a hand-held hose or drip irrigation systems from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m.
* Irrigation of lawns by means of a hand-held hose only between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m.
Uses not subject to mandatory restriction include those for health and safety reasons, for the production of food and fiber for private or commercial use, for the maintenance of livestock, or to meet the core functions of a business (golf course, plant nurseries).
Water Department staff will be monitoring all sprinkler use in town and will stop to remind residents of the new restriction policy. A second notice may result in a $50 fine.
