Canton High boys lax roars out of the gate with 4-0 start
By Jay TurnerUpdate: The CHS boys lacrosse team extended their season-long unbeaten streak to six in a row with two wins this week against division foe Sharon.
With talent up and down the roster and an offense that seems to be firing on all cylinders, the CHS boys lacrosse team has gotten off to a blistering start in the spring 2021 season.
Led by junior captain Sam Carlino and senior captain Jeff Fitzpatrick, the Bulldogs tore through the early part of their schedule with four consecutive wins: 19-9 over Attleboro, 11-9 over Mansfield, and 16-0 and 16-4 against neighboring Stoughton.
During that stretch they averaged more than 15 goals per contest while outscoring the opposition by a combined margin of 62-22. Both figures easily lead the Davenport Division as Canton stakes an early claim as a legitimate Hockomock League contender.
Carlino leads the team with 19 goals and 12 assists, while Fitzpatrick has scored multiple goals in three of four games. Several young players have also been a factor offensively, led by freshmen Brendan Tourgee and Pat Drury and sophomore Jeff Chaput.
“There’s lots of optimism with this group,” said interim head coach Tommy Galvin, “and through our first four games they have already built great chemistry with one another and exceeded expectations.”
Not to be overlooked is the Bulldogs’ stout defensive corps, anchored by senior defenseman Jack Albert and senior goalie Dylan Coyne. Other key defensive pieces include Sean Connolly, Ben Naples, Carson Campbell and Colin Blake.
“The defense has been very solid through the first four games,” noted Galvin. “They have flown under the radar due to our offensive explosion, but they have helped us create offense by creating turnovers.”
With four wins now in the bank, the Bulldogs will look to continue their hot streak with two games this week against Sharon and two more next week against North Attleboro. The team also has a Monday home date with Milford which kicks off at 6 p.m. at Memorial Field.
