Talented CHS girls track team aims for strong finish

The CHS girls outdoor track team suffered its first meet loss of the spring last week against a powerful North Attleboro squad, but the sky’s the limit for this year’s lady Bulldogs as they prepare for the start of the 2021 championship season.

With one dual meet remaining this afternoon at Oliver Ames, the Canton girls (3-1) will look to solidify the second spot in the Davenport Division before turning their attention to next weekend’s Hockomock League Championships at Foxboro High School.

The following weekend is the MIAA sectionals with qualifying athletes advancing to All-States on Saturday, June 26.

Eight CHS track athletes will also be competing at an invitational this Sunday, June 6, at Gordon College. Participants include Maddie Rousseau, Talya Mendez-DeGraw, Kiley Hanlon, Diana Tambi, Katie Oliver, Kiara Cerruti, Jonathan Chery and Deyontai Dennis.

In the Canton girls’ 80-56 loss to North Attleboro last Thursday, Mendez-DeGraw broke the school record in the 100m with a time of 12.5 seconds and also anchored the winning 4×100 relay along with Diana Tambi, Leah Murphy, and Katie Oliver. The relay ran a season-best time of 52 seconds.

Rousseau, the Stonehill College bound senior captain, also had a record-setting day for the Bulldogs as she topped her own best mark in the 100-meter hurdles (14.6 seconds) and tied the school record in the 200m from 1982 (25.9). She also added second-place finishes in both the long jump and triple jump.

Cerruti was another double winner for Canton with top finishes in the mile and 800, while Hanlon took second in the 200 and 100. The Bulldogs also picked up some points in the field events with third-place finishes by Angie Elias in the discus, Emma Massih in the shot put, and Maeve Morrissey in the javelin.

The Canton boys, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win after falling to North Attleboro 88-48. Depth has been an issue for this year’s squad, but the Bulldogs still boast some impressive top-end talent, led by seniors Jonathan Chery and Deyontai Dennis.

Against the first-place Red Rocketeers, Dennis won all four of his events (400 hurdles, 100 hurdles, long jump, triple jump) while Chery won the 200m and placed second in the 100m and long jump. Kyle Downing added wins in both the mile and two-mile and Jack Hernon won the 800m.

The boys team will have one more shot at a regular season victory as they travel to Easton to compete against the 2-1 Oliver Ames Tigers today at 3:45 p.m.
