News Notes: Fire chief issues final COVID update

By

On Friday evening, May 28, Canton Fire Chief and Emergency Services Coordinator Charles Doody issued his final COVID public health update via the Reverse 911 system. Thanking the public for their efforts over the past 18 months, Doody was pleased to report that Canton was “squarely in the green,” with a positivity rate of less than 1 percent.

With the governor having recently rescinded the mandatory face mask order and with all industries now permitted to open at full capacity, Doody said the town will host one final COVID Zoom webinar on Wednesday, June 16, at 7 p.m. to discuss Canton’s “new normal” and reflect on lessons learned. Residents can visit the town’s COVID-19 information page for a direct Zoom link, or they can watch the webinar live on Canton Cable or via live-stream at CantonCommunityTV.org.

Doody also reminded residents that the Pfizer vaccine is now available for all residents age 12 and older, while the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are available for those 18 and older. Appointments are readily available in many locations, and residents can search for nearby vaccination sites at vaxfinder.mass.gov.

“This is an exciting time in which we are able to reengage with our community, our friends and our loved ones,” said Doody. “Let us stay vigilant and take the lessons learned from this pandemic to keep each other healthy and safe.”

CPD assists in veteran escort, holds free bike clinic

Last week, the Canton Police Department’s Mobile Operations Unit assisted in escorting World War II veteran Pvt. Anthony Grasso to Logan Airport. Grasso, 96, of Norwood, was on his way to South Carolina to pay his respects to the man who saved his life during the war, U.S. Army Lt. Frank DuBose. Grasso’s story was chronicled in the book All Souls Day by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Joseph Pereira of Quincy, and the release of the book last year inspired a group of local residents to arrange for Grasso’s trip.

Also last week, the CPD bike unit hosted a free youth mountain bike clinic at Gunning Field at Canton Woods, located off Route 138 near the Stoughton line.
