Update: The Bulldogs edged Foxboro 7-6 on Wednesday but lost the rematch two days later 11-6. The team can secure a share of the Davenport Division title with a win on Monday, June 14, versus Oliver Ames.

With another win last Thursday at division foe Oliver Ames, the CHS boys lacrosse team stayed perfect on the season at 10-0 overall while closing in on their first Davenport title since 2015.

Despite their unbeaten record, the Bulldogs entered the final week of the regular season in a neck-and-neck battle with Foxboro (10-2/8-0), who they were due to face on Wednesday in Foxboro and again today (Friday) in Canton.

“The boys have played really well and the coaching staff is really proud of what they have done,” acknowledged head coach Ryan Quinn earlier this week. “It’s nice to have won the games we have played, but our entire focus is on our upcoming games with Foxboro.”

The Bulldogs also have a makeup game with OA remaining on the schedule for June 14, but if last week’s result is any indication, the Tigers do not appear to pose much of a threat.

On June 2 in Easton, Canton rang up 14 goals behind another monster performance from junior Sam Carlino, who scored five of his own and assisted on six more to bolster his team-leading totals. An outstanding attackman, Carlino now has 40 goals and 33 assists through 10 games and was second in the league in total scoring behind Franklin’s Matt Lazzaro going into this week.

Other standouts in the OA game included senior Jeff Fitzpatrick (4g, 2a) and freshman Pat Drury (2g, 2a), who are both now hovering around the 30-point mark for the season. Drury is one of several young players who have made a big impact for the Bulldogs in 2021, along with fellow freshman Brendan Tourgee and sophomore Jeff Chaput.

The Canton defense, meanwhile, continues to shine behind Jack Albert and goalie Dylan Coyne, who had a huge game against the Tigers last week with 13 saves and only two goals allowed.

The Bulldogs will likely need all of their top players and then some to contribute if they are going to take down Foxboro in this week’s highly anticipated ‘home-and-home’ series. A win in one of those contests would all but guarantee Canton at least a share of the Davenport crown and a sweep would knock the Warriors out of contention for the division entirely. Win or lose, both teams are sure to be a factor come tournament time, which gets underway sometime next week.
