Several Canton High track athletes headed to All-States

Several CHS outdoor track team members will be moving on to the All-State Championships at Norwell High School this Saturday by virtue of their outstanding performances at the Division 2 south sectional meet held last week at Notre Dame Academy.

Deyontai Dennis

Two of those qualifiers — Deyontai Dennis and Maddie Rousseau — took home the title in their respective events with Dennis topping the field in the 400 hurdles and Rousseau placing first in the 100 hurdles.

Dennis, who is enjoying a spectacular senior season, also earned a spot in two other events as he took second overall in the triple jump (43’4.5”) and fourth in the long jump (21’8”). One week prior, Dennis placed in the top three in all three events at the Hockomock Championships, and earlier this season he broke the 60-year-old school long jump record with a distance of 21 feet, 11.5 inches.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Dennis ran a hard race, edging the runner-up from Dover-Sherborn by less than a tenth of a second with a best time of 58.37 seconds — a full second improvement over his second-place finish at the league meet.

Rousseau, meanwhile, bested her league-winning time in the 100 hurdles with a 14.70-second finish in the event finals. She also qualified for All-States as a member of the 4×100 relay team, which placed second with a time of 51:42 behind a group that included Kiley Hanlon, Talya Mendez-DeGraw and Katie Oliver.

Also headed to All-States to compete in multiple events is senior Jonathan Chery, who placed second in the 100m and third in the 200m. Chery won both events at the Hockomock Championships but bested his mark in the 200 at sectionals with a time of 22.67 seconds. His 100-meter time of 11.16 seconds was just a hair slower than the previous weekend, when he bested the field with a run of 11.13 seconds.

Junior Kiley Hanlon, in addition to qualifying with the 4×100 relay, will also be competing at All-States in the 200m after placing fifth overall with a time of 26.57 seconds.

Other top performers for the girls team at sectionals included Mendez-DeGraw, who placed ninth in the 100m (13.13); Kiara Cerruti, who finished ninth in the mile (5:25.87); and Rousseau, who placed 10th in the triple jump (33’9”). Mendez-DeGraw added a 15th-place finish in the long jump (15’6”) while Angie Elias took 16th in the discus (66’9”). Also participating were Corrine Campbell in the 800, 19th, 2:36.23; Hannah Fidas in the two-mile, 20th, 14:00.58; Oliver in the 100, 24th, 13.5; and Leah Murphy in the 100 hurdles, 27th, 18.58.

For the boys team, Jack Hernon placed 14th in the 800m with a time of 2:11 and Kyle Downing finished 17th in the same event in 2:13.15. Leo Fabrizio took 14th in the 400 hurdles (1:09.61) and Sean Sullivan placed 20th in the 110 hurdles (19.05).
