Gillis, Joan M.

By

Joan M. Gillis of Canton peacefully passed away at the Hellenic Nursing Home on June 22, 2021, after suffering from dementia for many years.

Born on April 3, 1931, in Boston to William and Sarah (McGovern) Hamel, she was predeceased by her siblings William Hamel of Richmond, Virginia, and Catherine Rogers of Quincy. Joan loved to garden and had an artistic eye for color, season and placement of flowers. She also had a passion for baking and had many delicious recipes; her oatmeal cookies were a generational favorite.

Joan and Herbert loved to dance with each other; they were married and very devoted to each other for 65 years prior to his passing on April 10, 2020.

Joan is survived by her children: Charles and Cynthia Gillis of Braintree, Jean and Frank Rotella of Canton, Linda Dart and her partner, Todd Richardson, of Attleboro, and Maureen and Gary Lambert of Easton. Also survived by two nieces and two nephews, William Rogers and Kelly Ellis, both of Quincy, Max Hamel of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Katja Hill of Richmond, VA, and her 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

We are most grateful for the loving care she received from the nursing staff at the Hellenic and her hospice team.

Joan left this earth on a beautiful sunny morning — the kind of day you could find mom and dad sitting on the deck enjoying the birds and flowers. They are finally together again enjoying life ever after.

Burial will be private. To sign guestbook, see dockrayandthomasfuneralhome.com.
