Save Connor campaign reaches $1M mark
By Canton CitizenThanks to the generosity of thousands of individual donors from across the country, Canton native Mike Dobbyn and Marisa DiChiacchio were proud to announce on June 30 that they had reached the $1 million mark in their quest to save their son Connor, who has Sanfilippo syndrome. Often described as a form of “childhood Alzheimer’s,” Sanfilippo is a rare, progressive and presently incurable genetic disorder that affects children.
Last month, the Dobbyn family embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign leading up to Connor’s 13th birthday in hopes of kickstarting the first phase of a clinical trial aimed at curing Sanfilippo Type C. After raising an additional $300,000 in a matter of weeks, Mike and Marisa reported that Aramark Corp. had made a “significant pledge” that closed the final gap and brought their total to over $1 million — allowing them to meet the initial clinical trial expenses and keep the process moving forward.
In a post on their GoFundMe page, Mike and Marisa offered their heartfelt thanks to all of the 11,000-plus people who have donated to the cause, including several people who contributed multiple times. “We can’t even describe our emotions at this point,” they said. “Gratitude, tears, love. Words can’t even express our heartfelt thanks to you.”
