Canton’s Olivia Maffeo selected for USA Hockey camp
By Canton CitizenOlivia Maffeo of Canton, one of the region’s top high school girls hockey prospects, recently got the chance to test her skills against some of the best in her age group as a participant in the 2021 USA Hockey BioSteel Girls 16/17 Player Development Camp.
The week-long camp, held June 26 to July 2 at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, provided the nation’s top 16 and 17 year old players with age-appropriate on- and off-ice training and coaching from elite-level instructors. Maffeo, a defenseman, was assigned to the Navy team and recorded two assists in four games.
To be eligible for the Girls 16/17 National Player Development Camp, players must have been born in 2004 or 2005, must be a U.S. citizen, and must have participated in the district tryout process.
Now a sophomore at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Maffeo previously played for Canton High School and scored a league-best 33 goals as a freshman in 2019-20 while leading the Bulldogs to a share of the Division 2 state championship. She has also competed at the state and national levels as a longtime member of the Boston Junior Eagles girls hockey club.
A lifelong Canton resident, Olivia is the daughter of Nick and Kristen Maffeo and has two older siblings who also starred on the ice for the Bulldogs: Jackson (CHS ’17) and Alexa (CHS ’20). Their father, also a CHS hockey alumnus, currently serves as an assistant girls varsity coach and as president of Canton Youth Hockey.
