News Notes: RI man charged in string of car break-ins
By Mike BergerA North Providence, Rhode Island man has been summoned to court to face charges in connection with a rash of car burglaries that occurred last week in Canton. The suspect, Emanuel Salmeron, 19, faces 11 counts of breaking and entering into a vehicle and one count of malicious damage to a motor vehicle. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said Salmeron was arrested by Rhode Island State Police as the CPD was investigating the calls about the car breaks, and State Police found items belonging to Canton residents, including cell phones, wallets, and credit cards. Rafferty said most of the vehicles that were hit were left unlocked and she urged residents to lock their car doors. Fortunately, not a lot of money was stolen and many of the items were recovered by owners.
DPW supt. outlines road and water main projects
With the town now in receipt of its state Chapter 90 funding for FY22, DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta shared an update on plans for this season’s roadway projects.
Trotta said the DPW will soon begin resurfacing several streets in the Algonquin section of Canton (Raven, Seneca and Seminole roads, Navaho Drive, Hoosic Drive) as well as Standish Drive, Thomas Lane and Standish Circle. Trotta said the work will involve stripping the pavement, regrading the gravel base, and then placing two courses of asphalt. The roadwork should start next month, and Trotta estimates it will take four to five weeks to complete.
As for upcoming water main projects, Trotta said the DPW and its contractor will be replacing water mains, hydrants, and service connections on Edward Street, Barbara Road and Sandy Avenue; Hillsview Street and Autumn Circle; and Highland and High streets, Pond View Road and Pond Street. Trotta said the pipe work should be finished by the end of October and final paving will be done next year.
C. Naughton is the contractor, the same firm that did the water main work on Elm, Greenlodge, and Dedham streets. The pipe work on those streets is now complete. A permanent patch will be done on Dedham Street this fall, and final road paving on Elm and Greenlodge will be completed next spring …
