The Canton Citizen is pleased to announce its MVP selections for the spring 2021 season. All-star selections are also listed below (write-ups on each athlete can be found in the 7/29 print edition as part of our annual spring sports wrap-up.)

Boys Co-MVP

Dylan Coyne

A senior captain and three-year starter in goal for the CHS boys lacrosse team, Coyne was this year’s runaway choice for Hockomock Davenport Division MVP after guiding the Bulldogs to a 14-2 season and a trip to the D2 south final four. An elite goalkeeper, Coyne presided over the Davenport’s stingiest defense, allowing just 6.13 goals per game while holding opponents to five goals or fewer on eight different occasions. “Dylan is an extremely skilled lacrosse goalie,” said head coach Ryan Quinn. “But what makes him so impressive is his commitment to his teammates and the calm yet insightful demeanor he displays every day.”

Boys Co-MVP

Deyontai Dennis

One of the most talented and versatile athletes in CHS track and field history, Dennis capped off an unforgettable career with a brilliant senior season, winning the Division 2 south title in the 400 hurdles and qualifying for All-States in three different events (400 hurdles, long jump, triple jump). Head coach Anna Amico said Dennis’ ability to compete at such a high level in a wide variety of events is extremely rare. “He is a hard worker who never stops looking for ways to improve,” she said. In addition to his hurdles title, Dennis also placed second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump at this year’s sectional meet and leaves CHS as the school record holder in both the 400 hurdles and long jump.

Girls MVP

Maddie Rousseau

A senior captain, Rousseau leaves Canton High School as the greatest female sprinter-hurdler to ever don a Bulldog uniform. “Without her, we don’t go 4-1 and finish second overall in the competitive Hockomock Davenport Division,” said head coach Anna Amico. “She is a role model and leader. She earned every bit of success throughout her high school career, and I have no doubt that she will excel at the collegiate level.” A multi-time all-star, Rousseau finished her high school career as the Hockomock League and Division 2 South champion in the 100 hurdles and set school records in that event as well as the 100m and 200m. She was also part of the record-setting 4×100 relay team that took second at sectionals and sixth overall at All-States.
