BOH adopts indoor mask mandate
By Jay TurnerOn Monday, August 30, the Canton Board of Health voted to adopt an emergency indoor mask mandate, citing current COVID-19 transmission trends.
Under the new mandate, all individuals ages 2 and older are required to wear a face covering in all indoor public spaces, houses of worship, and all private spaces open to the public. (Exceptions apply to those who are unable to tolerate a face covering due to a medical condition or disability.)
The measure took effect on Wednesday, September 1, and will last until at least December 7.
The new mandate specifies that masks should be worn in the following settings: food service establishments and bars (except when eating and drinking); indoor performance venues (except when eating and drinking); indoor dance floors; hallways and common areas of hotels and multi-unit residences; fitness centers and health clubs; and personal service establishments (except when receiving skin or beard care).
The mandate also requires all businesses to notify customers of the face covering requirements and to direct staff to supervise and enforce mask wearing.
In a statement posted on the town website, the Board of Health noted that the measure was approved in the interest of public safety. However, the BOH stressed, “The mandate does not limit activities, nor does it place any new spacing requirements or capacity limits on these locations.”
