Canton High cross country teams off to promising start

After two opening meets, both CHS cross country teams are off to promising starts with a combined record of 3-1.

Both squads are coming off a 2020 season in which they graduated three of their top five runners. However, the returning talent looks strong, led by senior standouts Kiara Cerruti for the girls and Kyle Downing for the boys.

Just like last season, the Canton girls are unbeaten through the first two dual meets and they’re hoping to build on their 3-2 record from a year ago. The team is led by their two senior captains — Cerruti and Corinne Campbell, both second-year runners — as well as senior Hannah Fidas, a four-year veteran.

Head coach David Hiltz said the rest of the top seven will look to establish themselves, including junior captain Sidney Jabbour and classmates Johanna Bouwmeester, Tema Mazonson, and Emily Kelly.

The Canton boys, meanwhile, are off to a 1-1 start and are eager to improve on last year’s 2-3 mark.

The team features a strong corps of senior leaders, including Downing, Graham Stemm, Andrew DiBiasio and Brandon Allen, along with a promising crew of sophomores that includes a pair of top-seven runners from last year: Austin DiBiasio and Luke Darling. Other key runners include sophomores Sam Vail and Max Kupferman.

In last week’s meet against Stoughton, the boys earned their first victory of the season 26-29 as Downing placed first overall (17:33), followed by Darling in fourth and Kupferman in fifth.

On the girls’ side, Canton won convincingly by a 19-36 score, sweeping the top three spots behind Cerruti (21:37), Campbell and Fidas.

Cerruti also took the top spot in the September 10 season opener at Nauset, powering the girls to a 25-31 victory with a time of 21:08. Fidas was next for Canton in fourth, followed by Campbell in fifth and Bouwmeester in seventh.

In the boys’ race, Downing finished second overall but Nauset took most of the other top placements as Canton fell 20-46.

Darling posted a solid sixth-place finish in the loss while Kupferman took eighth and Andrew DiBiasio placed 13th.

goals by Han Hong in the midpoint of the second half and with two minutes to go in the game a goal by Annie Hoban allowed Canton to end the game in a tie.
