Leading solar company Safari Energy recently announced that it has acquired a portfolio of six solar projects located in the greater Boston area — including three projects in Canton — from Waltham-based ECA Solar. ECA Solar developed the projects and provided turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services. Safari Energy closed on the acquisitions when they reached the latter stages of development.

Headquartered in New York City, Safari bills itself as the “solar partner of choice for commercial and industrial customers, real estate owners, public sector organizations and solar developers seeking competitive financial solutions for their projects.”

Safari’s Massachusetts portfolio is made up of rooftop solar systems, a solar carport canopy and ground-mounted solar panels. One of the Canton projects it acquired, located at the Draper Properties site at 28 Draper Lane, is notable in that it includes all three types of solar systems.

Also acquired as part of the purchase were rooftop solar installations at 960 Turnpike Street and 100 New Boston Drive in Canton. The former is a multi-tenant office building and the latter is the headquarters of Humboldt Storage and Moving.

The newly acquired portfolio also includes two solar systems in Sharon and one in Woburn, and all are in areas served by Eversource. The projects benefit from the SMART incentive program available in Massachusetts, which incentivizes renewable energy generation.

The six solar systems are expected to produce as much as 5.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, avoiding nearly 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, or the equivalent CO2 emissions from 726 homes’ electricity use for one year, nearly 10,000 barrels of oil consumed, or more than 486 million smartphones charged.

Commenting on the acquisition, David Heyman, CEO of Safari Energy, said ECA Solar has been a “fantastic and reliable partner,” and now Safari is “proud to take these projects forward as their long-term owner.”

“We’re excited to grow Safari Energy’s presence in Massachusetts through these acquisitions,” Heyman said, “and we’re proud to continue supporting the advancement of the Bay State’s renewable energy agenda as one of the top developers and owners of solar assets in the state.”

ECA Solar also has projects in development in Colorado, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania, the home state of Safari Energy’s parent company, PPL Corporation. As part of PPL, Safari Energy supports the growth of distributed energy resources and PPL Corporation’s focus on advancing a sustainable energy future.

Safari Energy recently announced that the company’s 500th developed or acquired project is a 2-megawatt solar system located at Chevron U.S.A. Inc.’s San Joaquin Valley Business Unit’s offices in Bakersfield, California. To date, Safari Energy has acquired 116 solar projects in eight states nationwide, totaling more than 150 MW in capacity.
