With three more victories last week and another Tuesday night versus Mansfield, the CHS varsity field hockey team has surged into first place in the Hockomock Davenport Division.

As of Wednesday, the Bulldogs stood at 7-2 overall, just ahead of rival Oliver Ames. The Canton girls have not lost a game since they were defeated by the Tigers back on September 13, and the two will meet again for a highly anticipated rematch next Thursday at CHS.

In the meantime, Canton continues to string together quality wins, highlighted by a 1-0 victory last Wednesday against a very talented King Philip team.

Senior Sarah Cunningham put the Bulldogs up late in the opening quarter, and then the defense clamped down, neutralizing several Warrior scoring chances throughout the second half.

Goalie Carolyn Durand picked up the shutout — the team’s sixth over the last seven games — and the entire defensive corps played lights out as KP had nothing to show for its 10 penalty corners.

Head coach Chrissy O’Connor said the quartet of Carly Fitzgerald, Sierra Abbott, Katie Lavoie and Laura Valkanas have made tremendous strides over the past several games and have turned what was once a question mark into one of the strengths of the team. “Our whole defense has really started to come together and have just been playing great for us,” she said.

Offensively, the team is starting to get contributions from several different players, and they’re averaging better than 4.5 goals per contest during the seven-game winning streak. Last week against Sharon, the Bulldogs set a new season high as five different players got on the scoreboard in the 7-0 victory, including Payton McDonough, Izzy Digirolamo, Lila Spinelli, Ellie Bohane, Abbott and Fitzgerald (2).

“We’ve seen a lot of progress across the board and everyone’s contributing,” noted O’Connor. “We still have things we can work on and we can still get better, but at this point of the season we are very pleased with where we’re at.”

Coming off a big win at Mansfield, the Bulldogs will now play their next three at home, starting with Foxboro tomorrow afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
