CHS track alum gearing up for 1st Boston Marathon
By Canton CitizenFormer Canton High track standout Patrick Hession will be running the 2021 Boston Marathon as a member of Dougie’s Team supporting the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Hession will be raising money to help the Flutie Foundation continue to fund programs that help people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest.
The Flutie Foundation provides direct financial support to families to relieve the financial burden of caring for a loved one with autism, and collaborative grant making to autism-serving organizations. The Flutie Foundation works towards creating opportunities for people with autism to lead lives where they are included, respected and engaged in their communities.
Hession will be completing the Boston Marathon virtually on October 9, planning his route from Canton to South Boston. Hession is running in honor of his younger cousin Jack, who has autism. Hession, a 2020 graduate of the University of Dayton, currently works for ThermoFisher Scientific. This will be his first Boston Marathon.
“My cousin Jack has been a huge part of my life,” said Hession. “He is one of the funniest, most honest kids I know, and his journey throughout his childhood has been truly inspiring to me. I noticed how much progress he made with the help of his autism coach, and I would like all kids and adults with autism to have the opportunity to get personal assistance to help learn how to deal with their autism.
“I also want to spread awareness to let people know what things autistic people struggle with, and things that make them uncomfortable. Too many people are ignorant as to what autism is, but with more knowledge, I hope to see the very unfortunate social stigma associated with autism disappear. I am excited to do this by running the Boston Marathon for the Flutie Foundation.”
