Select Board owes us answers before acting on St. Gerard’s
By Canton CitizenTo the voters of Canton:
The Canton Select Board’s proposal that the town consider purchasing (possibly by eminent domain) the St. Gerard Majella Church property should pose a number of questions for voters to carefully consider at the Special Town Meeting on December 1.
* Why should the town buy this property?
* What use does the Select Board envision for the property?
* Would the church building be renovated, or torn down and a new building constructed?
* What would happen to the rectory building?
There will be substantial expenses incurred by the town with any scenario. Canton voters need to have more information as to the commitment of tax dollars to fund such a purpose. At the December 1 Special Town Meeting the Select Board should present a detailed proposal of the different options for the property and the anticipated costs associated with each option. We should not rush to purchase this property just because it has become available.
Act in haste, repent at leisure.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathleen Keith
