Revere sign, family artifacts up for auction

By

A rare painted black and gold leaf trade sign lettered “Joseph W. Revere” — son of Paul Revere — from the Revere Copper Company in Canton will be sold at an upcoming Americana auction at John McInnis Auctioneers in Amesbury.

The sign was found hanging on the wall in a Canton home near the former Revere copper mill site. In addition to the sign, the sale will feature several Revere family items, including two 18th century silk and woolen shoes, wrought iron calipers, a turned wooden handle, a silk and leather sewing valet, key, empty account book for Paul Revere’s daughter-in-law Mary Robbins Revere, four letters between Paul Revere’s granddaughters Maria and Elizabeth, a Revere Copper Co. tag for Miss “Myria” (Maria) Revere, and an addressed envelope to the Rev. Robert Rogers, grandson-in-law of Paul Revere.

The two-day live auction with in-house seating is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 10 and 11, at 10 a.m. at the John McInnis gallery at 76 Main Street in Amesbury. Items to be sold include early American formal and country furniture, folk art, paintings, carpets, textiles, pearlware, decoys, miniatures, photography, firearms and more. Absentee, phone and live online bidding will be available on both days.

The Revere sign and family items are listed under lot #0894 and scheduled to be sold on day two of the auction. The estimated sale price is between $1,000 and $2,000. For more information, visit mcinnisauctions.com.
