Fire causes major damage at Sika Sarnafil

At 7:50 a.m. on Friday, December 24, Canton firefighters responded to a report of a fire at Sika Sarnafil, a major manufacturer of rubber roofing systems located at 100 Dan Road.

Fire Chief Charles Doody, who was at the scene, said the fire was inside a piece of manufacturing equipment at the rear of the building and was difficult to access.

While it took several hours to control, crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the main building. Thirteen Canton firefighters responded along with members of the Stoughton Fire Department, and Norwood firefighters provided station coverage.

Doody said there were no injuries, but the manufacturing equipment was a total loss. Officials at the company estimate that the fire caused losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

COVID-19 Update: Canton still at high risk

For the week of December 17-23, the Canton Board of Health reported 105 new positive COVID cases for a seven-day incidence rate of 432.92 per 100,000 people. As a result, Canton remains in the high risk category based on CDC metrics. During this same period, 5.86 percent of all COVID tests taken returned a positive result. In the Canton Public Schools, a total of 23 students and staff had positive COVID results and 21 were required to quarantine during the period between December 16 and 22. The Luce School had 10 positive cases, followed by Canton High School with five, the Galvin Middle School and Rodman PreK with three each, and the JFK and Hansen with one case each.

Warrant now open for ATM 2022

The warrant for all zoning and non-zoning articles for the 2022 Canton Annual Town Meeting is now open and will close at noon on Friday, January 7. The Select Board is accepting warrant articles at its office at Town Hall. All citizen petition articles require the signatures of at least 10 registered voters and must be presented to the Town Clerk’s Office for verification.
