Health Dept. announces booster clinics for ages 12+
By Canton CitizenFollowing recent federal approvals of the Pfizer COVID vaccine booster for kids ages 12-15, the Canton Health Department has announced that it will offer two new booster clinics for ages 12 and older. The first clinic will be held this Friday, January 14, from 5-7 p.m. in the CHS cafeteria and the second will be held during the same hours on Thursday, January 20, also in the CHS cafeteria. Preregistration is required at home.color.com/vaccine/register/canton.
Based on the latest guidelines, anyone 12 and older can receive a booster if it has been at least five months since they were fully vaccinated with the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or at least two months since they received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Anyone who meets these criteria can sign up for a Pfizer booster dose on the above dates. Individuals needing a first or second dose of the vaccine may also sign up for a spot at either upcoming clinic. The BOH also continues to offer COVID rapid tests at its office on Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m. (by appointment only).
As of last Friday, Canton remained in the high risk category with 319 new cases reported during the previous seven days and a positive test rate of 16.49 percent. By comparison, six weeks ago, Canton reported 39 new cases and had a positivity rate of 3.22 percent. Overall, 80 percent of the town’s population has been fully vaccinated and 38 percent has received a booster.
Canton receives direct hit from Friday snowstorm
Canton was squarely in the “jackpot” zone for Friday’s major snowstorm as the town picked up just over 14 inches of snow within a 12-hour span, with the highest measurement (15.2 inches) being recorded atop Great Blue Hill on the Canton-Milton border. DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta said sanding began around 3 a.m. with plow crews hitting the roads a few hours later and working throughout the day. Trotta said 40 town workers and 18 contractors worked the storm with sanding wrapping up at 6:30 pm. Canton schools were canceled on Friday and all non-emergency town personnel did not have to report to their offices. Trotta estimated the storm expenses at $100,000 to $120,000.
