After opening the season with back-to-back losses despite two solid performances, the Canton High gymnastics team managed to break into the win column with another strong effort against Taunton last Saturday at Metro South Gymnastics Academy.

With a combination of talent, enthusiasm and perseverance, the Bulldogs were able to narrowly hold off the Tigers while setting a new season high in points, winning 121.55-118.3.

Canton is now 1-2 on the season with earlier losses to Attleboro (137.9-121) and Mansfield (119.6-114.2).

“The athletes were thrilled with the win, and they are feeling more confident moving into the next few meets,” said co-coach Jen Abbott who leads the team with Sean Reardon. “We are so excited to have such a hardworking team this year! Every day they work on improving their scores by adding difficulty to their routines.”

All of the Bulldogs’ top scorers in the meet were underclassmen, including freshman Jess Hooton, who posted team-high scores on both the vault (8.2) and uneven bars (7.7). Sophomore Abby Silvasy led the way on floor exercises with an 8.25 while junior Jenna Morgan had the high score on the balance beam (8.0).

Canton continues to improve in all four events but have been strongest on vault and floor, with scores against Taunton ranging from 6.8 to 8.2 and from 6.4 to 8.25, respectively. They also had a similar range on bars with a low of 6.4 and a high of 7.7.

Throughout the competition, all of the CHS gymnasts stood and cheered for each performance and their enthusiasm as a group was evident.

Rounding out the roster are senior captains Ellie Ashcraft and Kelly MacDonald, Emily MacKay, Emma Berardi, Toni Rodrigues, James Cordeiro, Mia Murphy, Hailey Lennon and Jacob LaBollita.

The Bulldogs were due to return to action this Saturday, January 15, with a home meet at against Franklin at Metro South beginning at 6:30 p.m.
